Growing up in Medford, Massachusetts I only saw TV3. Which is crap. It consists of a blue screen listing off events no one cares about, or poorly made home videos of middle school events. I believed this was just the reality of public access.
I lived in Lowell for a period of time in college, but I don't even remember the public tv there.
Then I moved to Malden. With it's higher population density and easier access to liquor licenses Malden offers a different feeling just one town over.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't sold right away. Growing up in the adjacent town I believed Malden was trashy and their football team sucked (I didn't care, but we had a high school rally to the effect yearly.)
Overtime flipping through the TV stations I began to find myself stopping on MATV. First thing that drew me in was a show called "Science Fiction Fandom". It consists of a panel of MegaDorks discussing things such as Battlestar Galatica and Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic books like they are the Iraq War to a half-empty (half-full if you're feeling optimistic) room. Now, I have no interest in Fandom, but I found this to be such a fascinating study of human behavior I couldn't take my eyes off it.
I'd like to thank the creators of Science Fiction Fandom for helping me to discover MATV. Since this time I have had the blessing of discovering great public TV such as After Hours with TC Restani and my latest favorite Bottoms Up with Ashley Bottoms. Thank you.
Please enjoy a small peice of what I have access to:
Medford Public Access has always been hit or miss. When we were maybe 9 or 10, it was AMAZING! Do you remember Totally Trivia? And there was one with a bunch of middle school girls doing this song that was all "hot hot hot like fire...burn burn fire" with crappy camcorder tricks (holla for sepia!)and other etc. that made life wonderful. Then for almost 10 years Medford Public Access was blue screen with local events and reminders for old people to get flu shots. The last two years have seen a SERIOUS rise in fantastic though. First they started showing repeats of Totally Trivia from the 90's. Remember Lauren LeClair? Yeah, I saw an episode with her when she was like 9. Maybe younger. Also nowadays Medford Public Access has this INSANE show where a guy who I'm convinced is on the spectrum plays asinine clips from youtube and awkwardly comments on them. AND there's the show where a guy just sits and reads the newspaper and gives his opinion on current events.
ReplyDeleteOkay, ALSO the show with the "MegaDorks" as you call them (the PC term is "UltaDork" by the way) sounds like a fountain of wonders that I would love to see a live taping of if possible. I am also interested in maybe being a special celebrity guest panelist because CALL IT WHAT IT IS I'm an UltraDork as well.
Also also how do we get our own public access show? I don't have a ton of free time but I really am interested. I have a lot to say and I think public access is an appropriate venue for my talent level.
Also also also if you like public access, you should watch Tim and Eric Awesome Show (Great Job):

It's not as good as real public access because it's not 100% authentic BUT it's still really good.
No more alsos.
and No More "I Love You's" by Annie Lennox.
I hate noticing mistakes right after i post my daaamn comment. It's ULTRADORK. U-L-T-R-A-D-O-R-K! "UltaDork" is going to get me in trouble with the ACLU.
